Dolphins delight on derby day

Carl Preston had another impressive game

‘El Dorsetico’ Part 3 on New Year’s day brought three more points for promotion chasing Poole.

With the Dolphins missing inspirational Captain Michael Walker and the marauding Keith Emmerson, the Magpies must have fancied their chances, however, the Dolphins deadly strike duo, Warren Byerley and new signing Michael Charles had other ideas. From as early as the third minute Wimborne were on the back foot with Carl Preston forcing Magpies keeper Dan Ackerman into a smart save, and from the resulting corner the ball was cleared off the line followed by Byerley heading against the crossbar. A goal seemed certain until the referee came to Wimborne’s rescue and awarded a free kick for a foul on Ackerman. Poole didn’t have to wait long for the breakthrough, Ackerman’s poor kick was headed straight to Charles who hooked the ball into the path of Byerley who lashed the ball in from twenty yards. The Dolphins then dominated the rest of the half, Charles came close to doubling the lead , and Steve Devlin had his header cleared off the line. However, Wimborne managed to get to the break only one down.

Wimborne started the second half brighter with Jamie Davidson shooting across goal and Jon Blake heading over from a corner. That was a good as it was going to get for the hosts though. On sixty four minutes Carl Preston showed the Wimborne defence a clean pair of heels and produced a pin point cross for Byerley to slide home to make it 2-0. Byerley and Charles linked up again moments later but Charles hooked the ball over the bar.

The Dolphins saw the rest of the game out comfortably making it seven wins in a row, scoring eighteen and conceding only three. If Poole can continue to show this form for the rest of the season then promotion will surely come to Tatnam.
