An application to fell a sycamore tree in East Street, Wareham, has been refused by Dorset Council following consideration of an application by developers.
The mature tree, which is protected by law, stands within the town centre’s conservation area. There are few large trees in the area, which heightens the tree’s importance.
The council’s tree team inspected the tree to assess the evidence and evaluate the public amenity issues.
There is a cavity and decay within the tree, but the experts believe that felling is not necessary and that more proportionate remedial work could be carried out. The tree team concluded that the removal of the tree at this time is premature and will erode the distinct character and appearance of the area.
