DORSET GREENS CALL ON CRIME COMMISSIONER TO HELP SAFEGUARD IMMIGRANT FAMILIES

Local Greens are backing the contribution economic migrants make to Dorset life.

West and South Dorset Green party chairman Kelvin Clayton said:
“We welcome the role people from all over Europe and beyond are making to our economy and to our public services. I’d urge everyone to celebrate how inclusive our society has become…and not to turn our backs on that.”

The call comes after a sharp increase in attacks, intimidation and calls of “Go Home” directed at minorities since the Brexit vote. One group logged 90 different online threats to immigrants and their families in the last three days.

Kelvin said:
“A place where primary school children can be abused because of their language and their accent isn’t a great country, it is a small minded and a nasty one.

“When Brexiteers talk about ‘Getting our country back’ that shouldn’t be allowed to mean a country where everyone has to be the same as them.

“I hope the county’s Police and Crime Commissioner can reassure us that we will continue to show zero tolerance towards anyone perpetrating these kind of vile attacks in Dorset.”

Kelvin added:
“Scapegoating Europe in general or immigrants in particular for our problems is a mistake that will only create Nigel Farage’s Little England. Savage cuts to Dorset’s health services, to our youth centres and to our schools are not being perpetrated by immigrants…they are the result of doctrinaire cuts imposed by a Conservative government and Conservative County Council.

“And climate change doesn’t respect national borders. It is a threat that can only be tackled by working together with others across Europe and around the world.

“Dorset Greens make no apology for continuing to work for the common good.”
