Elderly man pleads guilty to manslaughter following death of woman in Bournemouth

A man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility following the death of his wife in Bournemouth.

Dorset Police received a report at around 7pm on Saturday 3 June 2023 raising concern for the welfare of a woman at an address in Roscrea Drive off Wick Lane in the Southbourne area.

Officers attended with the ambulance service and very sadly, 83-year-old Elizabeth Richings was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following an investigation by the Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT), a man was charged in connection with the incident.

On Monday 27 November 2023, Grenville Douglas Richings, aged 83 and of Bournemouth, pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility at a hearing at Winchester Crown Court.

He is due to be sentenced on Tuesday 12 December 2023.
