Dear All
Some of you may be aware that I have been working/training on a big challenge to raise money for The Dorset Youth Association of which I am proud to be a trustee. The time has now come for me to put my sanity to the test with an attempt to cross the English Channel the long way from Omonville la Rogue (nr Cherbourg) back home, hopefully to Swanage with my intrepid partners Barry Ashdown and Mark Rainsley. In short a tidal journey of circa 65 nautical miles. I have attached a link for more information on the trip and of course a link to everyclick my fundraising page if you would like to donate (even the smallest amount) to the project.
In short the DYA provide much needed support to young people and families across the county through a variety of measure which include running a drop in centre (Routes), supporting youth clubs, running programmes in the community (including the brilliant and successful ‘Strengthening Families’ and ‘Smart Cookies’), outdoor activities and a variety of other important projects. Last year was our 70th anniversary and we were proud to have Prince Edward visit and endorse our work together with meeting our young people.
Money raised from this paddle allows us to have unrestricted funds (ie not provided by government for specific projects) that can be used for providing a range of activities to enrichen children’s lives who simply would not get the attention elsewhere. To leave you on a poignant note as a charity we handed out around a hundred food parcels last year to local children who simply weren’t being looked after by their own families, the flip side of the coin is that Dorchester, in a recent audit, has the lowest borrowings per head against any other English town.
