A free cycle training course aimed at getting more people to travel by bike is being launched across Bournemouth.

Bournemouth Borough Council has teamed up with Life Cycle UK to offer adults free cycle training sessions designed to build confidence, and inspire more people to travel by bike.

Starting this summer (August) anyone over 16 years and who lives, works and studies in Bournemouth will be able to register on the free cycle training course.  The sessions are tailored to the individual’s specific needs which may include:

  • How to undertake a bike, helmet and clothing safety check
  • Learning basic bike control skills including use of gears
  • How to ride at junctions and roundabouts with confidence
  • How to plan your cycle journey or commute to work

Councillor David Smith, Cabinet Member for Planning and Environment said, “We are delighted to offer free cycle training to those who live, work and study in the town.

“Cycling is a healthy way for people to commute which can help reduce the number of cars on the roads and benefit the local environment.

“This is a great opportunity for people who are looking to gain extra confidence on a bike, improve their cycling experience and plan their best route to work and college.”

Life Cycle UK’s Training Manager, Jacqui Wilcox said, “Cycling is an easy way for adults to keep fit as it can be combined with everyday journeys. We welcome people of all abilities including complete beginners, those who are returning to cycling and want to brush up on their skills, as well as commuters looking for support with their journey to work.”

The free cycle training programme will be available in Bournemouth from August 2014 to March 2015 and will be held in convenient locations across the town.  Training is available in small group courses or personalised one to one sessions.   For further information and to book a course, please visitwww.lifecycleuk.org.uk/bournemouthor call 01202 451088.
