Mark E Smith died on 24 January 2018 of lung and kidney cancer aged 60.

‘If it’s me and yer granny on bongos it’s the Fall.’

Possibly the most uncompromising lead singer of all time. With over sixty band members across a forty two year period the only ever present was Mark E Smith.

As a band The Fall never attempted to conform to fads. Their longevity is largely dependent upon Smith distancing himself and the band from the music industry.

His abstruse song titles, were often derived from cutting out words and phrases from books and newspapers. With a strong Mancunian accent his songs were often cryptic and deserving of cerebral engagement.

Mark E Smith is an extremely important part of British musical history and although a very difficult person for many to interact with or comprehend he should be treated with the reverence he deserves.
