Joyce was a US born fascist who took German citizenship in 1940.

Joyce received a slash from his ear lobe to his mouth at a political meeting in 1924. He claimed it was from a ‘Jewish Communist’ but it later transpired it was from an Irish woman.

In 1932 he Joined Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists and then in 1939 he fled to Germany with his wife Margaret, following a tip off he was to be detained by the British authorities.

He accepted a job as as a radio announcer and scriptwriter at German radio’s English service and took over the nickname of Lord haw Haw of Zeesen.

His broadcasts urged the British population to surrender.

He was captured in 1945 whilst attempting to flee to Denmark. He was charged with treason but was acquitted on two of the charges However, although he was officially a US citizen, because he had falsely claimed a UK passport the British state was able to successfully prosecute him and he was found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging.

The historian A.J.P. Taylor remarked in his book English History 1914–1945 that “Technically, Joyce was hanged for making a false statement when applying for a passport, the usual penalty for which is a small fine.

In the 21st century the propagandising of Joyce has become normalised by many media, although much more subtly, and has been warned against by many a writer and academic from Orwell to Chomsky to Pilger.
