The Spanish town of Guernica stands in solidarity with Palestine.

On April 26, 1937, Guernica was bombed by Nazi Germany’s Conc Legion in one of the first aerial bombings. The Guernica siren that sounded for Nazi genocide in Spain sounded for Gaza 86 years later.

The town of Guernica, forever remembered for its tragic past during the Spanish Civil War, hosted a significant event in solidarity with Palestine, paying homage to history in a unique way.

The Guernica-Palestine Citizens Initiative, a collective comprising unions, political parties, and social groups, revealed a symbolic human mosaic on December 8. This event drew parallels between Guernica’s enduring pain from the past and the ongoing struggles faced in Gaza.

Taking place at the town’s main square, where civilians suffered merciless bombings in 1937, the event conveyed staunch support for Palestine during the present conflict with Israel.

Sirens sounded in remembrance, while artists and poets from Palestine and the Basque region shared poignant readings and soul-stirring songs.

In a bold statement, the organizers declared their purpose: to shed light on the ongoing genocide inflicted by Israel upon the Palestinian population.

They convey a powerful message through a human mosaic in the square, portraying the Palestinian flag and the anguish of civilians caught amidst Israel’s attacks on Gaza.

Guernica, strategically significant during the Spanish Civil War, faced devastation in 1937 when German and Italian planes, under the orders of General Francisco Franco’s Nationalist forces, carried out a devastating air raid.

This assault resulted in widespread destruction and the tragic loss of countless civilian lives.

The renowned artist Pablo Picasso famously captured the horrors of the Guernica bombing in his iconic painting of the same name. Created between May and June 1937 in Paris, the painting stands as a testament to the brutality of war and currently resides in the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid.
