ELM TREE INN CROWDFUNDER BOOSTED BY NEW TIKTOK DOGS VIDEO

The race is now very well underway to save the Elm Tree Inn as a community-owned pub at the heart of our rural Dorset village in Langton Herring.

Our TikTok videos have been an amazing success, with global reach! From Australia to Newfoundland, Ukraine to South Africa, Singapore to Brazil, and right across the UK, Europe, and the USA, people have been loving the sentiments and humour in our little videos and pledging donations.

We have been absolutely astounded by the love from Gen Z supporters and Boomers alike and have already seen over £19,000 come in small donations and a similar amount in share purchases from over 800 local and international supporters.

The latest video features some familiar voices and a host of canine stars from the village!!

We now need local businesses and individual supporters to buy shares, which are being issued for a minimum of £200 to a maximum of £65,000 per individual or organisation. We would also welcome any donations in kind, which would help us to raise further funds from our supporters. We would be very grateful for any type of support that anyone might be able to provide.

The Story So Far

We know that the Elm Tree Inn was established over 300 years ago, as records of landlords extend that far back. The haunt of smugglers, fishermen, coastguards, and sailors, as well as more recently the armed forces embarking for both World Wars, Barnes Wallis and the bouncing bomb experiments, torpedo teams, and Cold War spies.  It has attracted customers from all the local villages, as well as from further afield, given the area’s stunning landscape and connections with the South West Coast Path and Hardy Way.

After the pub closed in December 2023, the Friends of The Elm Tree Inn (FOTETI) initiative was set up after a series of public meetings and a survey, which led to plans for a community purchase. We have joined the Plunkett Foundation, and they have advised us on the appropriate steps of our journey to purchase the Elm Tree Inn and operate it as a community pub. With their help, we have set up our Community Benefit Society.

We also managed to extend the status of the pub as an Asset of Community Value for five years, and we have conducted discussions with the current owner of the Elm Tree Inn, who had recently refurbished and updated the pub. We have registered with the Financial Conduct Authority, and we are officially registered as The Friends of The Elm Tree Inn Ltd (Registration Number: 9439) and launched our share offer. This is the principal method by which we are going to be able to finance the £650,000 that we need to purchase the site and support the reopening of the pub.

It is difficult to access grants at this time, but we are following all potential leads, including donations, fundraising events, loans, and crowdfunding. We already have a number of pledges totalling nearly £300,000. Our website sets out our vision and business plans for the Elm Tree, details of the share offer, and rules of the Society.
