Fans of a certain iconic 1990’s/early noughties American comedy will instantly recognise the accompanying image from the poster hanging on the wall in Joey and Chandler’s apartment. A superb choice by Matt or Matthew; the director or members of the production team or whoever it was as it signifies both the ethos of this popular sitcom and Stanley Laurel and Oliver Hardy. Friends! Knowing that helps us to empathise and laugh at once. Not malicious and not meant to offend even when the violence of the tongue or the saucepan appears to contradict this sentiment. We can love and despair with them knowing they will always be there for each other. Eternally endearing.

We have loved Laurel & Hardy since childhood. Not a fan of silent movies as many in the generation above were they made the seamless transition into ‘talkies’ and captured us from when we first watched the daily shorts, on the BBC, each morning of a school holiday in the early 1970’s. Approximately 20 minutes of bliss leaving us having to wait twenty four hours for the next. Each adventure had its similarities but also a majestic desire to make us laugh using techniques from the vaudeville and slapstick days that preceded. They set the comedic mode for countless performers that were to follow and still inspire many today. They were not attention seekers; they were modest and grateful to be loved. Even in their later years they could still be reduced to tears when people took their time to welcome them. After repeated viewing the author cannot avoid occasionally adopting a mannerism.

For those who already love these comedic vanguards or who just welcome a lift from life’s sometimes stagnant pageant have a look at our personal choice for the top ten (in reverse order) of Laurel & Hardy’s short (and not so short) films and by all means let us know (Facebook) if you disagree with our choices.
