Proposals setting out an investment plan for bereavement services across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole are being considered by BCP Council’s Cabinet next month (16 December).

As part of the report the council is proposing a five-year business plan in direct response to the changing needs within the funeral market.

The report specifically sets out a two phased approach with cabinet being asked to approve an initial £559k to further develop Poole crematorium into a high-quality ceremonial and memorial venue for families and loved ones.

Councillor Mark Anderson, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said; “We are absolutely committed to offering a high quality, professional bereavement service. Our staff are highly qualified and dedicated to ensuing that the needs of the deceased and their families are met.

“We recognise the funeral market is changing with many people looking for more bespoke packages when it comes to saying goodbye to their loved ones. These proposals will enable the council to improve the service offer further and meet the wishes of the bereaved at their time of need.

“Importantly our plans will enable us to respond to significant market trends and will ensure the council retains its market share within the bereavement market, providing confidence in our commitment to deliver a sustainable bereavement service for our residents in the future.”

If approved, the council will report back to cabinet as part of phase two setting out an investment plan for the longer-term use of Poole Crematorium once the impact of the implementation of phase one has been fully evaluated and at this stage we will review the reintroduction of a crematory at Poole.

Ahead of the cabinet meeting the report will be considered at the council’s Overview and Scrutiny Board on 7 December.
