Who is James Dyson?
Sir James Dyson is a prominent British inventor, engineer, and entrepreneur known for founding Dyson Ltd., a company famous for its innovative vacuum cleaners and other household appliances. Losing the libel case
James Dyson’s defamation case against the Daily Mirror publisher was unsuccessful. The 76-year-old inventor presented his case at the Royal Courts of Justice over a piece published in January 2022. The article, by journalist Brian Reade, referred to Dyson as the “vacuum-cleaner tycoon who championed Vote Leave due to the economic opportunities it would bring to British industry before moving his global head office to Singapore.” Reade added, “Kids, talk the talk, but then screw your country and if anyone complains, tell them to suck it up.”
Dyson claimed the article was a “vicious and vitriolic” attack, but Mr. Justice Jay dismissed the claim, stating Dyson couldn’t demonstrate financial loss or harm to his philanthropic work. Dyson’s representative argued the articles were a serious and unjustified slur, while the publisher defended it as “honest opinion.” The defense stated that Dyson couldn’t dictate how the commentator posed the words, as they were substantially correct.
