The clockface of the iconic Jubilee Clock will be turned orange from 7 to 11 May to recognise Weymouth’s Repair Café and the great work they do for the community.

Repair Cafe Weymouth is run by volunteers and offers expert repairing skills – mechanical, electrical, electronic, carpentry, sewing, jewellery and craft – to fix broken items to avoid them going in the bin unnecessarily.

While events are currently suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, Repair Cafe Weymouth hopes to restart with a four-hour event on Saturday 11 September from 10:30am.

Weymouth Town Council are lighting up Weymouth’s iconic Jubilee Clock throughout 2021 to raise awareness for good causes. The council aims to represent one cause or charity per month, with the clock being lit for up to three days during the month.

Members of the public were asked to nominate any local or national charities they wanted to see represented. Nominations were then taken to Weymouth Town Council’s Tourism, Events and Fundraising (TEAF) Working Group for consideration.

A Weymouth Town Council spokesperson said:

“The Jubilee Clock is a proud symbol of Weymouth’s heritage and we’re delighted it can be used to give charities and good causes the opportunity to promote and raise awareness for their work.

“Repair Cafe Weymouth is a wonderful cause to recognise – it has quickly become a much-loved event for the community, with a vibrant social atmosphere, where residents can meet new people and gain new skills. As it encourages the repair and reuse of items, rather than buying new it also has environmental benefits and is something the whole community can get involved with.”

Ros Dean, founder of Repair Cafe Weymouth said:

“It is hard to believe that it is two years since Repair Cafe Weymouth’s first live event at the Palm House on 11 May 2019. We held just nine events in our first year, before the pandemic struck. We were among the top three repair cafes in the country for the national Big Fix event in February 2020.

“The visitors who brought their items to be repaired loved the ambiance and the concept of watching their repairs being done by volunteers and the volunteers loved it too. Orange features strongly in the Repair Cafe logo and we are thrilled to see the Jubilee Clock tower lit up in orange in recognition of this great initiative for Weymouth.”
