According to official records, “man of the people” Lee Anderson accepted a £15,000 donation from one of Westminster’s ritziest private clubs.

This week, the Ashfield MP incited outrage by saying that those who utilise food banks waste their money on “fags and drink.”

He also faced criticism for utilising a member of his staff to support his claim that nurses shouldn’t utilise food banks.

He published a photo of Katy, one of his employees, and said she made £30,000 per year and did not require a food bank.

However, it has since come to light that he took a gift from the prestigious Carlton Club equal to half the yearly income of one of his employees.

“Lee Anderson’s constituents will be startled to hear about this enormous money donation,” said Anneliese Dodds, chair of the Labour Party. This self-described “man of the people” seems to be no different from the several other Conservative MPs who are content to accept donations from a posh, members-only Mayfair club. He shares their lack of relevance.

The group gave Mr. Anderson a £15,000 donation for “local campaigning,” according to the recently released register of Members’ Interests.

After former whip Chris Pincher was accused of groping two men there in June of last year, the club gained notoriety.
