Today families and survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire are coming together for a memorial service at St Paul’s Cathedral. It is a difficult and important time for those affected by one of the biggest tragedies this country has seen.

Adel Chaoui, who lost family members in the Grenfell fire, said “a tragedy like this should have been avoided after the Lakanal House fire” [1].

Six lives were lost at the fire at London’s Lakanal House in 2009. An inquest was held and its findings given, but those findings were never introduced.

Recommendations from the report included:

  • Use of fire resistant materials
  • Regular fire assessments
  • Providing residents with full instructions about what to do in the event of a fire

Petition starter John who lives on one of London’s many estates and works next to Grenfell that had these been implemented, they could have helped save lives at Grenfell Tower.

He is calling for the recommendations of the Lakanal House report to be implemented now, to stop another tragedy happening. Over 106,000 agree and have signed his petition –  will you join them?
