Library display and wreath laying to commemorate D-Day anniversary

Following a request from the Mayor, the D-Day local heritage exhibition, which has been on display in Bournemouth Central Library since 17th May, will be moved to the Town Hall reception on Friday 6 June.

The exhibition, which includes newspaper reports from that period, also allows veterans and relatives to add their memories to the town’s local archive.

Veterans and relatives are being invited to join the Mayor of Bournemouth, Councillor Chris Mayne, from 10.30amon Fridayas he lays a commemorative wreath at the War Memorial in the central gardens at 11am.

Mayor of Bournemouth, Councillor Chris Mayne, said:

“D-Day was a historic point in WW2. I will be holding a commemorative event this Friday to recognise the contribution that local residents made to Operation Overlord and Neptune and to highlight the bravery and sacrifice of our young men as they fought to liberate Europe.

“This is one of the first events of my Mayoral year and I feel honoured to commemorate it in this way. The move of the D-Day exhibition to the Town Hall will make it easier for those veterans and relatives to record their thoughts.”

If you would like to attend Friday’s event or are unable to come but want to add your feelings to the Bournemouth D-Day archive please contact the Mayor’s PA, Hazel Randall on 01202 451117.
