In a statement, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: “HM Coastguard is currently coordinating the search for a male, following a report of a person in the water at Bournemouth Beach.

“The Poole and Southbourne Coastguard Rescue Teams, a Coastguard helicopter, Poole RNLI lifeboat, and Dorset Police are currently on scene.”

Local news reports say a helicopter is hovering over the area, while RNLI jet skis and volunteers are searching along the seafront. An eyewitness told the Bournemouth Echo that people were being asked to get out of the water.

Last year, a 12-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy died after getting into difficulty in the water off Bournemouth Beach. An inquest found Sunnah Khan and Joe Abbess had drowned and suggested they had been caught in a riptide.
