A man has been jailed for six years and nine months for an aggravated burglary on Portland.

Dean Hallam, 51 and of Victoria Square, Portland, was sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court on Wednesday 23 January 2019 after admitting the offence.

In the early hours of Saturday 15 September 2018 two men entered a property in Chiswell by forcing a side door open while the owners slept upstairs.

They stole a number of items including a television, games console, laptop, mobile phone, scanner and a meat cleaver.

Following enquiries, CCTV was obtained that showed the two men entering the property with one of them carrying an extendable baton. A local officer identified this man as Hallam and he was arrested on Saturday 13 October 2018. A number of the items taken from the burglary were found at his address.

The second offender has not been identified.

Detective Constable Holly Spillman, of Weymouth CID, said: “Dean Hallam forced his way into someone’s home armed with a weapon and stole a number of valuable items.

“While fortunately nobody was hurt as the victims were not disturbed, it must have been very distressing for them to find that the safety of their home had been violated in this way.

“We are determined to protect our communities from potentially dangerous offenders such as Hallam and this significant prison sentence will help to ensure this.”
