Members asked to approve sale of Dorset Enterprises

Bournemouth Council’s Cabinet will be asked to approve the sale of the former Dorset Enterprises Unit on Elliot Road at next week’s meeting (Monday 23 June).

The factory, which has been unused since its closure in March 2013, provided an employment service to adults with disabilities.

Since the closure an alternative and more effective approach has been implemented by the Council through the Community Employment Service (CES). Thisis focused on achieving outcomes agreed with the person themselves, which means that greater numbers of people receive support as they pass through the service. The average period of support through CES is around a year, before the individual is able to manage their own work arrangements, although some clients need on-going low level support to maintain their employment.

Within the last ten years the CES has supported 930 individuals with disabilities to attain, sustain and maintain work, education and/or training, compared to 19 individuals being employed at Dorset Enterprises who had disabilities over that same time frame.

As a result, the Dorset Enterprisesfactory is now no longer needed and after considering other options for its use, the Council are proposing the sale of the factory.

Councillor Blair Crawford, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, said:

“The current model of supported employment is already proving in Bournemouth to be a more cost effective method for providing permanent paid work for people with disabilities compared to the previous model at Dorset Enterprises.

“It is providing a higher quality of support, meeting the needs of the individual and the requirements of prospective employers. It is delivering a service to a much greater number of adults at a lower cost, contributing towards our priority for a more efficient Council.”

The agenda and papers for the meeting are on Bournemouth Borough Council’s website here:
