The new leader of the Labour Group on Weymouth and Portland Borough Council has said that he is determined to shake things up at North Quay.

Councillor Mike Byatt, who represents the Westham East ward, was elected as leader at the Labour group’s Annual General Meeting last night (Tuesday 27 May).

As Labour leader, Councillor Byatt heads the largest Party on the Borough Council after Labour topped the polls across Weymouth and Portland at last Thursday’s local elections. The Labour Party gained three seats and successfully defended a further two, taking the number of Labour Councillors on the Borough Council to 15.

Councillor Byatt will assume the role of Chair of the Management Committee at the Council’s AGM, next Thursday 5 June, and says that, under his leadership, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council will undergo radical change:

We have a challenging agenda and clear set of strategic priorities to deliver, including the Harbour, negotiations with Condor Ferries, the development of North Quay council offices and a town centre master plan. These priorities were outlined in our radical Vision document, which will provide the blueprint for this Labour-led Council.

There is a lot of work to be done but this transformation agenda is key to ensuring the economic development that is necessary to help make Weymouth and Portland thrive again, and to help improve the every day lives of residents across the Borough.”
