Generations Apart Present:

Tyneham: No Small Sacrifice is a musical interpretation surrounding the downfall of Dorset ghost village, Tyneham, during November 1943. The village was evacuated by the War Office to train troops in readiness for D-Day. The villagers were promised they could return after the war, a promise that was never to be.

2013 is the 70th anniversary of the evacuation. To celebrate this, a new theatre company, Generations Apart have brought to life the compelling history behind Tyneham’s downfall.
The musical captures the wide range of emotions and conflicting views of the villagers,
highlighting the incredible sacrifice they made for their country. Tyneham unpicks human relationships and focuses on how, when we falter, there is almost always someone
there for us.

This unique portrayal of the Tyneham story is underpinned by an ambitious score from 17 year old Jordan Clarke, in his first professional role as composer. He has written a full orchestration for a cast of thirty five, whilst studying composition and A levels at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester. This has created an interesting long distance writing partnership with 67 year old lyricist and show director, Vince Jones. Based in Dorset, Vince has a long history of involvement with musical theatre.

“I could never have asked for anyone better to collaborate with and anyone more willing to accept my crazy new ideas. I’ve come into the partnership with a whole new view of musical theatre to that of my co-writer Vince. We’ve had completely different things to share and teach each other. We have very different writing methods and ideas have just bounced off each other so well”.

The idea was conceived by long term friend of Vince’s, Geoff Tizzard King, also in his sixties and the third member of Generations Apart.

“I’ve been involved with musical theatre for a long time and I’ve also loved visiting Tyneham. With all the information now available regarding Tyneham I began to realise there was a musical waiting to be written. So I turned to my old friend Vince Jones who is a great writer and new friend Jordan who is a fantastic musician. I expressed the idea to them and they were captivated and the project took off from there”.

Tyneham: No Small Sacrifice runs from 30th October – 2nd November 2013 at The Bay Theatre, Weymouth College.
