Local musical four piece covers band Screw Loose are a bit shocked by their 22,500+ YouTube channel views—quite a bit shocked!

“We’re just a little old covers band from around Poole, but we guess we must be doing something, right?” Joff, drummer and social media coordinator for the band.

“We only started the YouTube channel at the start of COVID lockdowns to entertain ourselves and put a smile on a few faces at a difficult time, but we enjoyed the challenges, so we’ve carried on trying to develop our skills and share good-quality content.”

516 hours, or over 21 days, of viewing time. Honestly come from across the globe and not just Mary, lead singer Maddisons Mum! The next challenge is to try and extend the average viewing time as well as come up with new and exciting ways and places to video the band”.

Last Christmas Screw Loose was given exclusive access to Farmer Palmer’s Christmas Grotto to film The Pretenders classic 2000 miles, so this year?

“We’re not totally sure yet – unlike professional bands, we have to wait until we can persuade someone it’s a great idea to let us come and mess about with instruments – and until their seasonal offerings are up and running – but we’re open to ideas from anyone”

The most recent upload to the channel is a cover of 80’s Eurythmics classic Sweet Dreams, but done very differently: “Some songs we try to keep as close to the original as we can—this one we felt we could play around with. We shot the video in our very understanding rehearsal rooms, Absolute Music, just trying out different lighting, etc. to make it a bit moodier.”

And what’s next for Chris, Joff, John and Maddison as a quartet?

“It was very recently our 5th birthday as this line-up and to celebrate, rather than just popping to the pub for a few…” The Barking Cat in Parkstone is a regular meeting place for the band and where they will be providing the music for a 70’s-themed New Year’s Eve party. “We’ve teamed up with a choir to do something very different, and a project with some other local musicians is on it’s way too”.

“Bookings for 2024 are good; there are some new venues for us alongside pubs and clubs that have supported us for the time we’ve been together; we continually work on new songs—not our songs, as we’re a covers band—and we hugely thank the original artists and writers for amazing music; and we cover seven decades of rock, pop, and country, all well-known tunes to sing and dance to”.

So, finally, back to those 22,500 views: “It’s just mad! We’re so grateful that people spend time watching our content on YouTube—and our other social platforms that have thousands of clicks too—but mainly, it’s a resource for us to look back on in years to come and say, We did that! Look how young we look!”
