PRIORY MUSIC AND ARTS FESTIVAL

After two years of planning this new event, the week long, Priory Music and Arts Festival opens on Sunday 15th June with a concert at 3pm by the Bournemouth Symphony Youth Chorus conducted by Jean Holt and accompanied by Chris Dowie. This concert celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Friends of Christchurch Priory.

During the week there will be a wide variety of musical styles, ranging from Baroque to modern Jazz, Pionola, and Perscussion and workshops for local schools.

On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday There will be lunchtime concerts with Oboe and Harpsicord, Pianola and our own Geoffrey Morgan playing “The Best of British” are free entry with a retiring collection. On Friday 20th at 2pm the Iris Ensemble with the acclaimed pianist Karim Said will present a varied program. Admission is free with a retiring collection.

Adding to the Festival experience, the newly refurbished Cloisters Cafe is open daily from 10am-4pm offering a range of beverages, daily lunch specials and lite bites. 

The Festival concludes with a performance of Mendelssohns Elijah. This work was first performed in Birmingham in August1846, conducted by Mendelssohn himself before 2,000 people squeezed into the Town Hall. The reception was estatic, requiring an encore of four chorus’s and four Arias.

Tim Hooper directs the Bournemouth Bach Choir with four soloists, the Highcliffe Junior Choir and the Prioy’s own Senior Chorister singing treble.

Throughout the Festival the Priory’s ancient walls will be decorated with Artwork from the four schools in the Parish along with work from local artists.

For the period of the Festival there will a be a rare opportunity to see on display the Priory’s eclesiastical vestments, suitably positioned by the High Alter.
