Osprey Leisure Centre on Portland recently provided training facilities to a team of dedicated athletes in preparation for their Race to the Sun.

The local Weymouth athletes from the Sandsfoot Cafe Racers(SCR) took part in the very popular Majorca 70.3 half ironman distance recently. Accompanied by family and friends to support them they travelled to Alcudia and took part in this challenging event with over 3000 competitors from all over the world, taking part as individuals and teams. Everyone who took part fully deserved their finishers medal at the end ,some getting personal best times in spite of the 30 plus degree heat.

The group brought home two trophies, one by Linda Ashmore who entered as a solo competitor, using it as a warm up to her ironman event in July this year, she won her age (65-69 years) in fine form.  Two relay teams from the SCR entered the event primarily as a fun competition between husbands (Sam Wait , Jo Foot and Paul Mason )  and wives (Jodie Wait , Casey Foot and Kate Mason).  Kate Mason said ‘We were very pleased to find out we were the  first ladies team home in the whole competition, as well as finishing before the men!’

All of the athletes taking part train in the Weymouth and Portland area, using the Osprey Leisure Centre facilities ,  Weyport Masters swimming club and are supported by the Sandsfoot Cafe for their nutritional requirements!

Nigel Williams, Manager of Osprey Leisure Club said As Osprey Leisure Centre has perfect training facilities for indoor coaching and a slipway for open water access many swimmers use the centre to train for their first triathlons as do the Sandsfoot teams for the international events, it was great to see them doing really well on the world stage”.
