Raising the flag to say ‘thank you seafarers’ on Merchant Navy Day

People are invited to a flag raising ceremony for Merchant Navy Day on Saturday 3 September. Weymouth & Portland Borough Council will fly the Red Ensign at Cenotaph Flag Pole, Pier Bandstand, Weymouth Seafront to raise awareness of the UK’s ongoing dependence on Merchant Navy seafarers.

Cllr Richard Kosior, Weymouth & Portland Mayor, will be raising the flag at the Cenotaph at 10.30am to say ‘thank you seasfarers’. Cllr Kosior will be joined by local Merchant Navy veterans, their family and friends as well as other councillors.

Cllr Richard Kosior said: “It’s an honour to have the opportunity to raise the Red Ensign on Merchant Navy Day to show the borough’s appreciation for all the hard work the Merchant Navy does for the UK.

“The Merchant Navy Association are one of my chosen charities for the year, alongside MV Freedom.”

Weymouth & Portland Borough Council is supporting a nationwide call from the Seafarers UK charity and the Merchant Navy Association for the UK Merchant Navy’s official flag to be flown on public buildings and landmark flagstaffs.
