Rees-Mogg admits, voter ID was deliberate Tory gerrymandering (designed to block young voters, who tend to be more socialist)

Speaking at the National Conservatism Conference, Jacob Rees-Mogg took a swipe at Keir Starmer’s recent proposal to enhance the youth… vote by giving 16yr olds and EU Nationals the right to vote and then warned him that it would probably backfire…

“Parties that try and gerrymander end up finding that their clever scheme comes back to bite them, as, dare I say, we found by insisting on voter ID for elections and we found that people who didn’t have ID were elderly, oh, and they by and large voted Conservative. So we made it hard for our own voters…. so don’t get too fretful about random schemes brought up by the socialists because gerrymandering doesn’t really work!”

The consequences of gerrymandering can include distorted representation, reduced competitiveness in elections, and less accountability for elected officials. By manipulating voting opportunities, gerrymandering can lead to a situation where the electoral outcomes do not accurately reflect the overall political preferences of the population.
