The beach levelling works being carried out by Weymouth Town Council are going well and have concluded ahead of schedule. The beach was reopened to the public at lunchtime on Thursday, 13th February.
Since Monday (10th February), diggers have been out on the stretch of sand between the Pavilion and the Jubilee Clock. They have been moving sand around that gets pushed further up the beach over the winter and levelling it out ahead of the town’s busy season. These are annual works that are carried out now when the spring tide exposes more of the beach to work with.
Storms and high tides do move the sand around, so this vital work helps the beach to recover and ensures it is ready for residents to enjoy, as well as the arrival of seasonal tenants, including the kiosks, attraction sites, and heritage attractions in March.
As part of the works, a sandbank has been deliberately built up along the shoreline as part of an improved approach to beach levelling. This measure is designed to protect the newly levelled sand from being eroded by any late winter storms and to allow the sand behind it to settle properly. This sandbank will naturally subside over time, and we kindly ask that people avoid disturbing it.
