Major investment to enhance the overall environment at a key town centre location will get underway on Monday 20 October.
As part of the Three Towns Travel scheme, the new layout at Richmond Hill will revitalise this key town centre route, creating a more vibrant and fresh welcome for those visiting and working in this part of town.
The government funded scheme is part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to reduce congestion in the future and enhance the local environment. The works at Richmond Hill have been designed to improve road safety for all road users, as well as encourage more people to travel sustainably such as walking, cycling and using public transport.
As part of the improvements residents, businesses and visitors will benefit from:
· New segregated cycle lanes
· New crossing facilities for pedestrians
· New trees and seating areas
· New cycle stands
· The introduction of a 20mph zone
· A new loading bay in the existing lay-by on St Stephen’s Road
· A new a pick-up/drop-off and loading bay outside Richmond House
Councillor Michael Filer, Cabinet Member for Transport said, “We are delighted that through additional government funding we are able to make further improvements to another town centre site. The scheme at Richmond Hill will create a safer and more welcoming environment for the many visitors, commuters and shoppers who use this part of town.
“Keeping our town moving is a key priority and we are committed to reducing congestion. By making these improvements we are providing people with more options for how they travel whilst supporting the local economy.”
Richmond Hill will remain open, with the management of two-way traffic throughout the duration of these works. All access to residential properties and local businesses will be maintained.
Mike Holmes, Service Director for Planning and Transport said, “Inevitably there will be some disruption during construction, however we have planned these works to make sure this is kept to a minimum for local residents, businesses and the travelling public.”
The works are expected to be completed by March 2015, with a break over the Christmas period.
