Plans to improve a busy area of Southbourne are set to get underway next month (15 September).

As part of Bournemouth Borough Council’s Three Towns Travel programme, Seabourne Road has been identified as a major route for those travelling between Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch.

In a bid to ease traffic flow in and around Seabourne Road and to support local businesses by enhancing the environment, improvements will include:

  • resurfacing roads and pavements
  • better signage
  • re-allocating on street parking to avoid congestion, and
  • narrowing the junctions at nearby side roads to improve pedestrian crossing and safety

In addition to the transport improvements, the Council will also enhance the look and feel of the area, from sprucing up the street scene by removing unnecessary signage to implementing urban realm improvements.  Once complete the works will make this particular stretch of Southbourne more attractive for people to shop and visit.

Councillor Michael Filer, Cabinet Member for Transport said, “Seabourne Road has been recognised as a key commuter route, and by making these improvements now, we can help reduce congestion in the long-term and enhance the local area.

“Southbourne is a unique area with a warm community atmosphere and I am delighted we are carrying out these works now, so that we can continue to support this thriving part of town and retain the community atmosphere for our future generations.”

The works at Southbourne will cost £225k, which is from additional government funding successfully won by Bournemouth Borough Council to improve transport links in the town.

Ian Kalra, Head of Transportation Services said, “Three Towns Travel is about preparing for a future with more people, more jobs and more cars on our roads.  We understand that there may be some disruption during the works, however we will try to keep this to a minimum for local residents, businesses and the travelling public.”

The improvements will take approximately 10 weeks to complete and access for residents and businesses will be maintained throughout.
