Spa Road In Weymouth Is Closed To Traffic And It Is An ‘Absolute Joy’

The closure of the Dorchester Road end of Spa Road in Weymouth, Dorset, to vehicles has been a transformative change for the residents who call this area home. What was once a noisy and congested cut-through has now, at least temporarily, become a peaceful retreat, benefiting the well-being of all who live and walk here.

For decades, Spa Road was plagued by the constant hum of engines and the frustration of vehicles queuing to access Dorchester Road or using it as a rat run for Southill and Radipole Park Drive. Now, with the absence of vehicles, the area has been restored to tranquillity. The reduction in traffic noise is one of the most remarkable changes; gone are the relentless sounds of engines, to be replaced by the simple and soothing sounds of community life.

The newfound quietness has had a profoundly positive impact on residents. People can now enjoy their homes without the intrusive noise of passing cars, and stepping outside no longer means being met with a wall of traffic fumes and congestion. This peace has encouraged more outdoor activity, whether it’s walking safely, neighbours stopping for a chat, or people simply enjoying a relaxed wander.

One resident admitted that they ‘check each day that the mound of rubble is still there along with the hole in the ground and rejoice that yet another day without motorists brings joy and relief. Long may it continue,’ they say.

Without the danger of fast-moving traffic, Spa Road is a much safer route, making it more inviting for those who prefer to travel on foot or by bike. The closure has encouraged more people to embrace these greener, healthier modes of transport, contributing to an improved sense of well-being and a more relaxed local environment.

While some motorists may have initially found the closure inconvenient, the benefits of reduced noise, increased safety, and a stronger sense of community far outweigh any drawbacks. The days of Spa Road being used as a cut-through are on hold, and in their place is a quieter, calmer, and more pleasant neighbourhood.

The closure of Spa Road is more than just a traffic regulation; it’s a statement about prioritising people over cars, well-being over congestion, and tranquillity over urban noise. It stands as an example of how thoughtful urban planning could enhance our everyday lives, making Weymouth a quieter, happier, relaxed, and more liveable place for all. Just like it was in 1909.
