Superior apprentices learn the benefits of teamwork and adaptability with Land & Wave

Nine apprentices from Dorset-based manufacturing company, Superior, participated in an apprentice teambuilding day with Land & Wave.

First and second year apprentices from Superior faced a full day of activities to help develop skills required in the workplace. Apprentices were welcomed by the instructors at Burnbake Woods near Corfe Castle, before spending the morning problem-solving woodland tasks. They were then challenged to successfully build natural fires and cook on them. Apprentices also had a go at axe throwing.

Following a short lunch around a camp fire, the Superior apprentices were split into two teams and spent the afternoon planning and constructing rafts to race each other on Ocean Bay beach, Swanage. The teambuilding day ended with an evaluation of the challenges and achievements the apprentices had faced.

Kieran Bartlett, aged 18, second year apprentice at Superior, commented: “I really enjoyed the whole day with Land & Wave because it was really challenging. All the apprentices pulled together as a team to support one another and it really highlighted how important it is working together.”

Katie Bodman, head of training academy at Superior, commented: “It’s fantastic that Land & Wave can provide such valuable training and development for our apprentices. They thoroughly enjoyed their experience and the skills they have learnt are invaluable for the workplace.

“The Apprenticeship Academy is a fast-paced environment and our apprentices need to be adaptable, flexible and professional. The challenges Land & Wave provided will help our apprentices develop their time management skills and communication, as well as improve their leadership qualities and self-confidence – all of which are needed for progression to more senior roles.”

Graham Milton, business development manager at Land & Wave, commented: “It was great having the Superior apprentices with us for a day. We prepared activities for them based on encouraging teamwork, self-confidence and adaptability to new situations, all of which are crucial skills for them as their careers develop at Superior.

“We are now working on a team and individual review so that the Academy will be able to optimise the apprentices’ performances, following their time with us.

“At Land & Wave, we offer a range of two to three hour activities, including coasteering, jumbo paddle boarding and sea kayaking, as well as full day activities for corporate groups, stag and hen parties, youth days, kids’ clubs, overnight experiences and school trips. There really is something for everyone.”
