Following advice from the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) to ensure that the council adequately protect people from falling in the harbour, temporary railings have been introduced. As a result of a number of fatalities and falls in recent times and with a significant number of people abusing alcohol locally, especially during the Summer months, it was considered appropriate to act on the advice.
Although a number of people have not responded positively and on some occasions abusively the greater protection of the public was considered too important. This is especially the case given the increasing litigation culture. Whilst many are vocal with their complaining some of them would not think twice about running to a solicitor should an accident occur.
It is hoped that those locals… who tend to complain about the level of protection, now introduced for the public, will eventually realise that one death or serious injury on Weymouth Quay is one too many. It is also hoped that they will play an informed role in any future consultation.
This gull is perhaps a lesson to many. Just chill!
