The event, which will raise awareness of the many cultural and human experiences of the era, will include events such as an ‘Evacuee Project’ with local schools, and a ‘Portland at War’ exhibition at Portland Museum.

The borough council successfully received a grant from English Heritage to fund the event.

The new 1940’s Comes to Portland event happening at Osprey Leisure Centre on Portland on Saturday 21 June includes 1940’s displays, exhibitions, music, military convoy and a performance from “The Decadettes”.

Weymouth & Portland Borough Council Tourism & Culture Briefholder Cllr Rachel Rogers said: “It is great that we have successfully secured grant funding from English Heritage. The project has gained considerable support from the Portland community and we encourage residents and visitors to come and support these brilliant 1940’s events.”

1940’s Comes to Portland is from noon to 4pm and has been planned to coincide with the borough’s major Armed Forces Day Celebrations (21 – 27 June) giving thousands of visiting veterans and families a great opportunity to enjoy a packed programme of events and entertainment taking place throughout Weymouth and Portland.

During the week’s celebrations there will be a beach assault, a bridge building exercise, a major seafront service and parade as well as historic military vehicle displays and big band entertainment at the Weymouth Pavilion.
