Sunak and the Tories want to abolish degrees in social science, arts, and humanities because they think these degrees are useless.

The current Tory cabinet contains the following graduates:

6x History

4x Philosophy, Politics & Economics

1x Philosophy

1x Theology

3x English

1x Business Studies

1x Hospitality Management

5x No degree

3x Not specified

1x Chemistry

There are a number of possible conclusions to this.

a) They are correct and these degrees are in fact useless and create useless people whose only career prospects are to act as meat shields in pointless jobs like Tory Cabinet members serving the Establishment’s interests.

b) They are lying and the Tories actually want to keep these degrees but just for themselves and their kind and that if you want to study things like philosophy or English or theology or arts then you need to belong to a special club of elites. Subjects such as History and Philosophy are amazing at developing critical thinking skills and considering how many Westminster career politicians are holding these degrees it would also appear that they are closing off representative democracy to the plebs. ie those with vast personal wealth and contacts at prestigious universities can develop their critical thinking skills to become cabinet ministers and everyone else can fuck off.

c) More culture war bollocks and this is just a ruse to blame someone else for Tory failings. You know, the old chestnut “the reason this country has gone to shit isn’t because of 44 years of rampant neoliberal ideology no, it is because of all the arts lefties we’ve sent to uni rather than the engineers or scientists”. If you think about it, it’s clever – they are saying the reason you’re not all rich or on the housing ladder is because you didn’t pick the right degree and not because the system is rigged against you and the housing market is bonkers.

d) Distraction. In the midst of the biggest cost of living crisis ever, the climate crisis, an international energy war between superpowers, and a deadly pandemic that just won’t go away, they need us to talk about anything else rather than the rather BIG elephants in the room. They even make it sound like you’re paying for these “useless” degrees when 99% of higher education is funded through personal learner loans.

I think it is B, C and D.

What do you think?
