Mark Vine is a writer, lyricist and local historian living in Weymouth, known mainly for his first book, The Crabchurch Conspiracy. It’s a concise history of Weymouth during the English Civil War period and the events leading up to the conspiracy’s deadly consequences for the town. The book sets out to revive the reputation of its principle character, Dorset man, Colonel William Sydenham and his two brothers, Francis & Thomas and tells of their heroic stand against overwhelming odds during the siege and battle of Weymouth in February 1645. William Sydenham rose to be “second only to Oliver Cromwell in the councils of the Parliament” and for a short while after Cromwell’s death, effectively ruled England before the restoration of the Monarchy.
Mark also works for the internationally famous Dorset Celtic Rock band, The Dolmen and has written several of their lyrics along with enigmatic front-man Taloch Jameson.
Asked what his epitaph should be, Mark said … “The anti-hero’s anti-hero”.
