NHS Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group is encouraging parents and children to ‘go the extra mile’ and walk to school this October, as part of International Walk to School Month.
Currently 60 per cent of Dorset children travel by car to school and this in turn causes parking problems in the vicinity and a build-up of pollution at the school gates.
It’s understandable that getting your children to school and yourself to work can be difficult. You may think that walking to school just takes more time out of your busy day but with more traffic on the roads than ever, walking could turn out quicker and less stressful – why not give it a go?
In more rural areas it could just be too far to walk – however, if you live more than a 30 minute walk from school you could try the ‘park and stride’ approach. Just park further away from the school gates and walk that distance in. This will save time trying to get a parking space and reduces congestion near the school.
Health benefits
Walking could improve your child’s learning and academic skills as it increases alertness.Dr David Phillips, director of Public Health Dorset, said: “Walking is a great way for children to keep physically active, importantly physical activity can help children feel happier and also improves their concentration at school.”
Safety advice
It’s important to ensure you are visible to other path and road users. Wear fluorescent, high visibility clothing during the day and reflective material when it is dark.
Helen Duncan-Jordan, Deputy Designated Nurse for Safeguarding Children at the CCG said: “If your child is walking to school without you then plan the route together beforehand to ensure they aren’t walking in isolated areas and you are happy that they are able to cross roads safely. Walking with a friend is also a good idea and helps to build social skills”.
