The “Fourth Estate” describes the journalists’ role in representing the interests of “the people” in relation to the business and political elites who claim to be doing things in our names.

In a capitalist society the public and national interest are divided along class lines. In this context, the national interest is about state secrecy and keeping things from us. On the other hand, the public interest is about disclosure and our right to know. As citizens we are “the people”.

In this respect the reputation of the UK media, especially the press, has never been lower.

British trust in and approval of the news media overall is relatively low compared to other countries — and trust and use vary significantly based on people’s ideology.

This is then exacerbated by the bias and power held by individuals in media organisations who do not have the public interest at heart but their own ideological sympathies. These individuals then become a fluid entity between those they are supposed to be holding to account and the power brokers who regularly pluck them in to that very chamber of governance. Whereas we should have confidence in these people to expose the things the governance desire remains hidden this is now virtually impossible, as explained below.

  1. An impressive share, I just given this onto a colleague who was doing a little analysis on this. And he in fact bought me breakfast because I found it for him.. smile. So let me reword that: Thnx for the treat! But yeah Thnkx for spending the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love reading more on this topic. If possible, as you become expertise, would you mind updating your blog with more details? It is highly helpful for me. Big thumb up for this blog post!

  2. Can I just say what a relief to find someone who actually knows what theyre talking about on the internet. You definitely know how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people need to read this and understand this side of the story. I cant believe youre not more popular because you definitely have the gift.
