Drugs and alcohol have ruined the socialist spirit on council estates.

Addiction has led to families being torn apart and children are the most affected. County lines and child exploitation have seen children, as young as 10 being sucked up into a system of modern day slavery, from which their parents are helpless to save their kids. Some parents will be complicit in this way of life, as their kids can earn more money in a day than they could earn in a week. An honest day’s work is seen as futile and the pride in pitching up at the workplace has gone. The benefits system is geared towards keeping people never going beyond the glass ceiling, as low wages are often subsidised by universal credits. Living hand to mouth every week, means that it is hard to save for a holiday, even to a local resort, never mind a trip abroad. The ‘crabs in a bucket’ mentality is also known as ‘we are all in the same boat’ mentality.

Any form of creativity is seen as airy-fairy nonsense. Reading a book is seen as time wasting and any meaningful conversation is drowned out by the we don’t do politics rhetoric.

We are now 3 generations deep into this damaging system, with anyone who speaks up about the local dealers, having their windows put through and viewed as the grass of the estate. Anyone who tries hard to break out of the system is either seen as “ very clever” or “not one of us” and shirked.

How do we tackle this issue? How do we fight the real issues that are crippling our council estates?
