Last week, London mayoral Conservative candidate Shaun Bailey compared crime on the London Underground with New York at its most dangerous in the 1990s.
It’s unclear exactly whether Mr Bailey was drawing a comparison between crime on the cities’ subway networks, or more generally in the two cities.
On both counts, the claim is incorrect. Riders of the New York City Subway in 1990 — when crime was at its peak in the 1990s — were considerably more likely to experience serious crime than London Underground passengers are to experience any kind of crime today. Data suggests London is also safer overall than New York was in the 1990s.
