Professor Molly Scott Cato has triumphed at the polls to become the first Green MEP for the South West. She gained 11.1% of total votes cast.  The number of votes for the Green Party since 2009 increased by 29.19% in Bournemouth, 20.09% in Poole and 10.37% in Christchurch.

Professor Scott Cato has been working as a green economist for the past fifteen years since realising that most of our environmental problems arise from bad design of the economy.  She has visited Bournemouth several times to talk to local residents so will be a good representative of their views.

Michael Hodges, Chair of South East Dorset Green Party, says, “This is great news for those keen to protect workers’ and consumers’ rights, animal welfare and the environment. Green MEPs have secured a cap on bankers’ bonuses and have won tougher climate change reduction targets.  Greens put communities before fracking, local businesses before multinationals and animal rights before intensive farming.   It’s great that Molly will join fellow Greens in fighting for safe food, clean air and water and a peaceful, secure future for our children.”

The local party also thanks the two candidates, Alice Rogers and Paul McIntosh, who stood in local elections in Purbeck.  Although neither was elected this time, Alice gained a very encouraging 17.26% of the vote in Swanage South.
