Turbo Dynamics: Legendary Peugeot 405 T16 Pikes Peak Car

Recently Turbo Dynamics, located in Christchurch, overhauled and further modified a turbocharger for the infamous Peugeot 405 T16 Pikes Peak car for their longstanding technical partners, Geoff Page Racing.

The world famous vehicle, which has won the notorious ‘Race to the Clouds’ Pikes Peak competition TWICE, has been described as ‘iconic’ by Red Bull Racing.

Turbo Dynamics have worked with Geoff Page Racing on numerous projects over the years. Both companies are experienced, industry leaders in their fields and have come together in the past to engineer the MR-1500T 4 cylinder Power Plant which was launched at Autosport and most recently retro-fitted a 1980’s F1 turbocharger to Duncan Cowper’s Dax Rush.

The 405 T16 car, driven the the 1981 World Rally Champion Ari Vatanen, actually won the notorious Pikes Peaks race for two consecutive years running (1988 & 1989). During the latter victory Vatanen recorded a world-record time of 10:47:77 in the Peugeot.

Both Vatanen and the vehicle went on to star in the successful automotive film ‘Climb Dance’, which was based on Vatanen’s story at the 1989 Pikes Peak.  The film is still renowned today as being “one of the most important examples of motorsport cinematography ever to have been made”
