Transport technology scaleup Vivacity Labs has announced its partnership with Dorset Council, as part of a major sustainable infrastructure development in the county.

Fifteen Vivacity Labs traffic sensors will be installed across the county in Dorchester, Ferndown, Shaftesbury, Stapehill and Weymouth, which gather detailed and anonymous data 24/7 on transport modes, traffic flow and travel patterns. The sensors collect data to empower decision makers to gain a better understanding of live and historic transport mode usage and flows, and how this changes over time.

This comes after Dorset Council was awarded funding from the Department of Transport’s Transforming Cities Fund, which aims to improve productivity by investing in public and sustainable transport infrastructure in English cities.

As part of this initiative, Dorset Council is partnering with Vivacity Labs to understand the current cyclist, pedestrian, and traffic usage and trends in these areas. This baseline data – over a monitoring period of five years – will be used to measure changes in behaviour and modal shift following the implementation of active travel focused schemes, including new cycleways, walking routes and bus improvements.

Joe Allen, Principal Technician at Dorset Council, commented: “We chose Vivacity sensors for this project because we needed to solve the challenge of monitoring pedestrians and cyclists movements. A lot of traditional monitoring tech couldn’t deliver within the locations required, so we were looking for something innovative and forward thinking.”

Mark Nicholson, CEO of Vivacity Labs, added: “We’re looking forward to seeing the impact of data-driven decision making across the region, and providing Dorset Council with the insights it needs to achieve ambitions for a sustainable travel network. At Vivacity we’re striving to make cities smarter, safer and more sustainable and we look forward to seeing how data will help Dorset Council in the long term.”

About Vivacity Labs

Vivacity Labs makes cities smarter, safer and more sustainable by supporting and empowering authorities with the right transport data at the right time.

The company’s Artificial Intelligence sensors and ‘Smart Junctions’ signal control gather accurate, detailed and anonymous data 24/7 on transport modes, traffic flow and travel patterns, supporting strategic decisions to help optimise the transport network and improve urban infrastructure.

Cities need to harness technology that provides comprehensive, high-quality insights, especially when it comes to roads and public spaces. When investing in projects to support sustainable travel, road safety and liveable neighbourhoods, this data is invaluable, enabling more efficient planning, impact monitoring and assessment of a scheme’s success.

Vivacity Labs was awarded the Queen’s Enterprise Award for Innovation in 2021, and their sensors have been deployed in over 70 towns and cities across the UK – with international growth well underway.

Vivacity Labs takes the protection of personal data seriously. Their sensors have been developed using privacy-by-design principles to ensure that personal data is never compromised.
