The British Institute of Human Rights (BIHR), West Dorset District Council, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council and Dorset HealthCare are excited to announce that the Human Rights Tour 2015 will be coming to Dorchester on 5 October for an Afternoon Talk.
BIHR’s Human Rights Tour, now in its fifth year, takes place every autumn, with local groups from across the UK bidding to bring BIHR to town for free-to-attend, pop-up community education and debate days.
BIHR is delighted to be working with West Dorset District Council, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council and Dorset HealthCare to raise awareness about human rights in Dorchester, discussing and debating with local people how human rights are relevant in our lives, and what the future holds for the universal protections we all share.
This year’s Tour is particularly special, forming part of BIHR’s 15 Days of Action to mark 15 years of the Human Rights Act here at home. The 2-16 October will be jam-packed with 20 exciting opportunities across the four corners of the UK to get involved, learn, share and be empowered to join the conversations about how our human rights are protected. On 5 October, the action comes to Dorchester!
The Afternoon Talk will take place on 5 October from 1.00pm to 4.00pm at West Dorset District Council, South Walks House, South Walks Road, Dorchester, Dorset, DT1 1UZ and free tickets can be booked at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/fifteen-days-of-action-afternoon-talk-dorchester-registration-18312199281.
Commenting on the announcement, Sanchita Hosali, Deputy Director of BIHR, said:
“The British Institute of Human Rights is thrilled to be coming to Dorchester as part of this year’s Human Rights Tour. This is our fifth Human Rights Tour and is going to be our biggest ever so we are thrilled to be working with West Dorset District Council, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council and Dorset HealthCare to bring the story of the Human Rights Act to Dorchester. With powerful voices talking about unravelling the protection of our universal human rights here at home, it is more important than ever before for each of us to recognise what is at stake.
“How often do we hear about how the Human Rights Acts means Government has to tell Parliament about how well all new laws protect our rights, or the way it helps victims of crime seek justice, or make sure disabled people are treated with dignity?
“Together with West Dorset District Council, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council and Dorset HealthCare, we will provide a much needed space for a conversation with the people of Dorset on the often untold story of the Human Rights Act and the protections and benefits it brings to all of us.”
Cllr Alan Thacker, West Dorset District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Safety and Access, said: “We’re proud to be able to host the Dorchester leg of the tour. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about Human Rights and how it can affect us in our everyday lives.”
Cllr Christine James, Weymouth & Portland Borough Council’s Briefholder for Social Inclusion, said: “The tour is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Human Rights. I would like to encourage anyone to take the time to come to the talk and gain some valuable knowledge.”
David Corbin, Equality and Diversity Manager for Dorset HealthCare, said: “We have worked with BiHR in the past and found their contribution to Human Rights discussions to be both challenging and enlightening. This is a further opportunity to raise important issues and engage in a debates with partners, stakeholders and community groups and bring a renewed focus to this agenda in Dorset.”
