West Dorset, Weymouth and Portland beaches have achieved 11 excellent ratings for their bathing water quality.

Weymouth Central, Seatown, West Bay West and Ringstead Bay were among a host of beaches to achieve an excellent rating.

Lyme Regis’ front beach also received a good rating for it’s bathing water.

A classification for each bathing water area is calculated annually, based on samples from the previous four years. These classifications are ‘excellent’, ‘good’, ‘sufficient’ or ‘poor’.

Cllr Ray Nowak, Weymouth & Portland Borough Council’s Briefholder for Environment and Sustainability, said: “Samples are taken weekly during the summer months, obtaining an excellent ratings shows the constantly high water quality we have across our beaches.”

Cllr Mary Penfold, West Dorset District Council’s Executive Portfolio Holder for Enabling, said: “To achieve the excellent rating across so many bathing areas of West Dorset is superb. Having the famous Jurassic Coast world heritage site, wonderful beaches and excellent bathing quality is a great combination.”
