Weymouth Central has won two awards from Keep Britain Tidy including a prestigious Blue Flag.

It is the first time in over 15 years that Weymouth Central has won a Blue Flag award The beach, owned and managed by the borough council, has also been awarded a Seaside Award for 2016 from Keep Britain Tidy.

Cllr Jason Osbourne, Weymouth & Portland Borough Council’s Tourism and Culture Briefholder, said: “We are delighted to be able to fly the Blue Flag. This will add to the collection of awards that have been given to Weymouth Beach over the years including being voted the second best UK beach by TripAdvisor.

“We wouldn’t be achieving these awards if it wasn’t for the hard work of our Beach Management Team along with the businesses and concessions that we work in partnership with.

“By working in partnership we continue to make Weymouth Beach enjoyable for both residents and visitors.”

The number of Blue Flags awarded to English beaches has increased by seven this year and a total of 143 beaches in England will be flying either the Blue Flag or Seaside Award, telling residents and visitors that they are the best in the country.

Both awards are the quality marks for our beaches and mean those visiting them can be sure that they are clean and safe and meet the highest management and environmental standards, as well the tough bathing water quality standards.
