Dorset Mind is seeking passionate people to join their movement and raise awareness about crucial mental health issues. For Mental Health Awareness week this year (13th to 19th May), a cohort of the charity’s Youth Ambassadors are doing just that and tackling this year’s theme – Body Image.

With the dawn of social media, body image is a topic that is increasingly contentious. Posting images of yourself and your life across multiple online channels means that young people and adults alike are under increasing pressure to present curated versions of themselves. At the heart of Dorset Mind’s Ambassador campaign is the important notion that whatever your identity, it is okay to be yourself and to be comfortable within your own skin.

Preceding the week with an event at the Eco-Hub in Poole’s Dolphin Centre on the 11th May, the young Ambassadors will host an interactive event, offering the chance to explore body image and to learn ways to build a positive relationship with yourself and others.

To continue this momentum, the Ambassadors will then launch a social media campaign for the duration of the week by ‘taking over’ the Youth Service’s Instagram account – @dorsetmindyourhead.

Dr Andrew Mayers, psychologist at Bournemouth University and Patron for Dorset Mind said, “Our young Ambassadors are central to the work we do. We aim to inspire a generation of young people to become as passionate about mental health as we are. Young people can lead by example to help others talk more openly about their wellbeing and seek help where necessary. Early intervention may help mitigate a lifetime of poor mental health.”

Keep an eye out for the social media campaign on the Dorset Mind Your Head’s Instagram account (@dorsetmindyourhead) next week and why not take part in the event at the Eco Hub?
