Officers are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward following assaults in Gillingham – with one man arrested.

Dorset Police received a report at 7.55am on Thursday 14 October 2021 of two men next to a damaged blue Peugeot 206 being abusive to passing motorists in Rolls Bridge Lane. It was reported that they were destroying the car and throwing parts across the road, as well as trying to smash glass.

It was further alleged that one of the men had assaulted a woman – who was known to the man – at the scene. Two members of the public intervened and were also reportedly assaulted.

Officers arrived and a 29-year-old man from Gillingham was arrested on suspicion of assault. A hammer was located in the vehicle and the man was further arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon in a public place, as well as criminal damage and driving whilst unfit through drink. He has been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Police Constable Nicholas Hunter, of North Dorset police, said: “I understand there were a number of people in the area at the time and I am appealing to anyone who witnessed what happened to please come forward.

“I would also urge residents and motorists to please check their home CCTV systems and dashcams for any relevant footage to help my enquiries.”
