Chairperson of Uxbridge Labour Party resigns from party intimating that Starmer and co lack principles

The chairperson of Uxbridge Labour has stepped down from his position and renounced his party membership, citing the importance of principled politics. David Williams, who served as the chair of the Uxbridge and South Ruislip Constituency Labour Party (CLP), announced his decision in a tweet, stating that he has resigned from both roles.

In his tweet, Williams expressed his belief that politics should be guided by principles to avoid ending up with leaders like Boris Johnson and Liz Truss running the country. He acknowledged that Jeremy Corbyn had significantly strengthened the Labour Party.

The chair’s resignation comes in the aftermath of a closely contested by-election, triggered by the departure of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson. While the Tories managed to retain the seat with a narrow victory, their majority was drastically reduced from 7,000 to just under 500 votes.

Both sides attribute the election results to the contentious expansion of London’s Ultra-low Emission Zone (ULEZ), championed by Labour Mayor Sadiq Khan. The ULEZ aims to combat air pollution and traffic congestion by imposing a daily charge of £12.50 on non-compliant vehicles driving in central London. Mr. Khan’s proposal to extend the zone’s boundaries to include Uxbridge has faced strong opposition.

The Tory candidate, Steve Tuckwell, framed the race to replace Boris Johnson as a “referendum” on the ULEZ, and he attributed his victory to the public’s discontent with the plan. He asserted that Mr. Khan’s stance on the ULEZ had cost Labour the election and urged him to reconsider.

Senior members of the Labour party also acknowledge the role played by the ULEZ controversy in their defeat, while also noting that historically, the Uxbridge seat has always been held by the Tories and did not shift to Labour even during the 1997 landslide election victory.
