Keir Starmer had previously pledged to step down as the leader of the Labour Party if he was discovered to have violated lockdown regulations during a campaign event in Durham. However, it has come to light that the former director of public prosecutions, known as “Mr Rules,” had a prior encounter with the police. According to a friend’s revelation, Starmer was caught by French officers engaging in the illegal sale of ice-creams on a Mediterranean beach.

John Murray, a university friend of Starmer, shared this information during Politico’s Westminster Insider podcast. He recounted how they had traveled to the south of France as students, enticed by an advertisement promising lucrative earnings from selling ice-creams on the French Riviera. Murray explained that they made very little money and soon discovered that their activities were unlawful. While Murray was arrested, Starmer seemingly managed to escape with his ice-creams being confiscated.

Murray recounted, “We spent a month… as almost beach bums, selling ice-creams to tourists, and making about four francs a day. The place was overrun with other beach sellers because they’d all been deceived into thinking they’d earn hundreds of pounds a day. And then we found out it was actually not legal. So we spent our time kind of avoiding being arrested.”

He added, “To be honest, I did get arrested. But all that happened was you had your ice-creams confiscated, got a receipt, then had to walk back to the beach without your flip-flops.”

When questioned about Starmer’s involvement, Murray responded, “I can’t say that… I think he probably had his ice-creams confiscated. It was a minor offense.”

A Labour spokesperson clarified the situation, stating, “We are happy to clarify that no arrests were made, and no names were recorded. The only loss experienced was that of some discounted ice-creams.”

Starmer has cultivated a political image as a strict and principled lawyer, often juxtaposing his approach with that of the former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who is known for his more carefree and rule-breaking nature.

However, Starmer’s reputation was threatened last year when he faced accusations of violating lockdown restrictions by consuming a takeaway meal and drinking beer during a campaign event in Durham. He vowed to resign if found guilty by the police, but ultimately, no further action was taken against him.

This anecdote from Starmer’s student days offers a rare glimpse into a more relaxed side of the Labour leader. It also indicates that as the country approaches the next year’s election, increased scrutiny of Starmer’s personal life and past is to be expected.
